The documentation for SoftWindows for Unix is provided in two guides:
This "SoftWindows for Unix User's Guide" provides the information you need to use SoftWindows on your Unix workstation.
A separate "SoftWindows for Unix Administrator's Guide" describes how to install SoftWindows, and configure it to take advantage of specific features of your Unix installation. It is designed for use by advanced users, and assumes familiarity with Unix.
There are two ways to access the SoftWindows Guides:
You can find both of these guides in your Iris InSight bookshelf. To access the InSight books:
Choose Help from your Toolchest.
Select Online Books.
Choose the User's Guide from the SGI_EndUser bookshelf, or the Administrator's Guide from the SGI_Admin bookshelf.
For quick access to online help, use the Help pull-down menu from the SoftWindows application window. The Help menu does not represent the full SoftWindows Guide contents, but is a convenient way to get help on many commonly sought-for topics.
This guide consists of the following sections:
Chapter 1, “Introduction”—Describes the main features of SoftWindows and explains how it enables you to run PC applications on your Unix workstation.
Chapter 2, “Tutorial”—Helps you become familiar with using SoftWindows by describing how to install and run a typical Windows application.
Chapter 3, “Running SoftWindows”—Explains how to run SoftWindows, describes the key features of the SoftWindows window, and explains how to use floppy disks and the keyboard with SoftWindows.
Chapter 4, “Using SoftWindows”—Explains the features of the SoftWindows window and describes how to use floppy disks and CD-ROMs with SoftWindows.
Chapter 5, “Printing, input, and output”—Describes how to set up and use the SoftWindows serial and parallel ports for printing and serial communications.
Chapter 6, “Using Windows”—Gives a brief introduction to Microsoft Windows, and explains how to install and use Windows applications.
Chapter 7, “Using MS–DOS”—Explains how to issue MS-DOS commands, use the MS-DOS editor, and install and run MS-DOS applications.
Chapter 8, “Using SoftWindows with a text terminal”—Explains how to run SoftWindows from a text terminal, and gives details of the special keyboard sequences to allow you to enter PC key combinations.
Chapter 9, “Troubleshooting”—Provides answers to commonly asked questions and suggests solutions to the problems that you may encounter while running PC applications on your Unix workstation. It also gives explanations of the SoftWindows, MS-DOS, and Windows errors.
"Glossary"—Describes the technical terms used in the guide.
