This chapter describes the procedure for upgrading an existing Indigo2 IMPACT system to an Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 system.
Be sure to read the safety guidelines outlined in this section before proceeding with the installation procedures.

Follow these ESD-preventive measures:
Connect a ground strap to your wrist when installing and removing peripherals.
Be sure that you and all of the electrical equipment that you handle during this installation remain at a ground potential of zero to avoid damage from ESD.
Remove a component from its antistatic bag only when you are properly grounded with a ground strap, and only when you are working on the board or installing it.
Do not use an ohmmeter on the R10000 CPU module.

For Indigo2 power supply compatibility information, refer to Appendix A, "Indigo2 Power Supply Compatibility."
Before beginning the installation, make sure to complete the preliminary steps described in this section.
Before performing this upgrade, it is important that a full backup be made of the system. While this upgrade creates no extraordinary risk of data corruption, any time a system is disassembled, as in this upgrade, there is some risk.
This section lists the major contents of the upgrade kit (HU-TWOT5-IMP):

You need the following tools:
#1 Phillips screwdriver
SIMM tool (provided in upgrade kit)
wrist ground-strap (provided in upgrade kit)
electrostatic discharge (ESD) mat
You should also make sure that a CD-ROM drive is available, preferably one that is attached directly to the system (either internally or externally).
If you are not familiar with booting the IRIX miniroot and using the software installation tool inst, you should refer to the IRIX Admin: Software Installation and Licensing guide, Document Number 007-1364-060.
Remove the old components from the customer's system as follows:
Gracefully shutdown IRIX and turn the power switch off.
Disconnect all external cables from the system, including the power cable.
Open the top cover, as shown in Figure 2-1.
If there is a peripheral installed in the 5.25" drive tray, remove it now. As a precaution, you may wish to remove any peripherals from the 3.5" drive bay to prevent damage from shock and vibration while you perform the upgrade. However, this is not strictly required. If you do remove the 3.5" peripherals, note which bay each came from.
Disconnect the flex cable from the back of the 5.25" drive tray. Fold the wire retaining clips to the sides and pull the connector straight back. Be sure to pull on the connector or its mounting ears, and not on the flex cable itself.
Loosen the two large captive screws at the front of the system and remove the drive tray. Slide the entire tray back to unlatch it, then lift it from the system, as shown in Figure 2-2.
Lower the metal door that covers the GIO and EISA expansion slots, then remove the board set retention pin (if present), as shown in Figure 2-3.

Unfasten the screw(s) that hold the graphics board(s) in place and remove the board(s). If there are any EISA boards installed, remove them also. Figure 2-4 shows how to remove the graphics boards; EISA boards are removed in a similar manner.

Place the boards on an ESD mat, or some other cushioned, static-safe surface.
Unfasten the four screws that hold the power supply in place. Two are located on the back of the system and the other two are located on the side of the system, as shown in Figure 2-5.
Disconnect the power supply cables, as shown in Figure 2-6. It may be easiest to leave removal of the 3.5" drive power cable until the next step, when the power supply is actually being lifted out.
Hang the two large power supply cables over the supplied hooks, as shown in Figure 2-7. This will make it easier to slide the power supply forward without snagging the cables on the base board.
Slide the power supply forward about 0.25" (approximately 6 mm), then lift it out of the chassis, as shown in Figure 2-8.
Remove the two screws that fasten the EISA/GIObus backplane to the chassis, as shown in Figure 2-9.
Pull the backplane straight up out of the system. Pull on the metal tabs indicated in Figure 2-9.
Disconnect the speaker and power-switch wires, and the SCSI cable from the IP22 base board. The SCSI connector comes straight up. The speaker and power switch wires come forward, toward the front of the system. See Figure 2-10.
Remove the screws that fasten the IP22 base board to the system chassis. There are five screws from the back of the chassis, and two screws on the base board, as shown in Figure 2-11.
One of the two screws on the base board will be holding an IMPACT backplane mounting bracket. Store this bracket in a safe place. It is needed during reassembly of the system.
Slide the IP22 base board forward about 0.25" (approximately 6 mm), then carefully lift it out of the chassis, front first, as shown in Figure 2-11. As you do this, ensure that you don't scrape the base board against the edges of the chassis, or damage any of the cables. You may find that this is easier if you get the SCSI flex cables out of the way by gently folding them to where the power supply used to be.
Place the IP22 board on an ESD mat, or some other cushioned, static-safe surface.
Remove the new IP28 system base board from its antistatic packaging and place it on an ESD mat or some other cushioned, static-safe surface.
Remove all of the customer's SIMMs from the IP22 system base board, and reinstall them on the new IP28 board.
Figure 2-12 shows how to use the SIMM removal tool to unlatch a SIMM from its socket. Tilt the SIMM backwards, then lift it out of the socket. To install a SIMM, set it into the socket at the same angle at which you removed it. Press firmly to seat the SIMM, then tilt the SIMM upright until it latches.
Some high-capacity SIMMs may extend over the top of the SIMM release latches. In this case, you must unlatch the SIMMs using the front part of the SIMM release latches. Figure 2-12 shows both methods. Also, you must start with the SIMM having the lowest SIMM socket number (the one closest to the back of the chassis) and work towards the front of the system (highest SIMM socket number), removing the SIMMs sequentially.
You are finished removing the old components of the system. Proceed with Section 2.4, "Installing the New Components."
Install the new components as follows.
Install the IP28 base board. Place the board into the chassis, starting at the back, and lower the board down onto the slot pins as shown in Figure 2-13. You may find that this is easier if you get the SCSI flex cables out of the way by gently folding them to where the power supply used to be.
Slide the IP28 base board back as far as it will go. You may need to press gently on the keyhole slots (shown in Figure 2-13 detail) before the board will slide back.
Check to make sure all the screw holes line up, then insert and tighten all the screws (five from the back of the chassis, two on the base board), as shown in Figure 2-14.
Be sure to install the IMPACT backplane mounting bracket removed from the IP22 (Figure 2-16 shows its orientation, in case you get confused).
Connect the SCSI cable and the speaker and power-switch wires to the IP28 base board, as shown in Figure 2-15.
Install the graphics backplane. Lower it into position, then press firmly to seat the backplane connectors in the slots on the IP28 base board. Install and tighten the two screws that fasten the backplane to the chassis. See Figure 2-16.
Install the graphics boards and any EISA boards you removed from the system. See Figure 2-17.
Reinstall the board set retention pin (if one was present), as shown in Figure 2-3. Close the metal door that covers the GIO and EISA expansion slots.
Install the new power supply. This is easiest if you hang the two large power supply cables over the supplied hooks, as shown in Figure 2-18. You may also find it easier to connect the 3.5" drive power supply cable before lowering the power supply into position.
Lower the power supply into place, then slide it towards the back of the chassis. Align the screw holes on the power supply with the appropriate holes on the chassis, then install and tighten the four screws. See Figure 2-19.
Connect the five power supply cables. This is a reverse of the removal procedure, illustrated in Figure 2-6.
Install the 5.25" drive tray, tighten the two large captive screws, and attach the flat SCSI cable, as shown in Figure 2-20.
If the system had a peripheral installed in the 5.25" drive tray, reinstall it.
If you removed any 3.5" peripherals as a precaution, reinstall them.
Replace the top cover, as shown in Figure 2-21.
Reattach all the external cables you removed from the system.
In preparation for the software installation, make sure that a CD-ROM drive is attached to the system so that you can reinstall IRIX. Although you can use a CD-ROM drive across the network, the procedure given in Section 2.6 assumes the CD-ROM drive is directly connected to the system. It can be either an internal or external CD-ROM drive.
You are finished installing hardware. Turn to Section 2.5, "Testing the Installation."
Follow this procedure to verify that you installed the upgrade correctly and that the components are working properly:
Power on the system.
Press <Esc> to enter the System Maintenance Menu.
From the System Maintenance Menu, enter the Command Monitor.
At the Command Monitor prompt (>>), type
hinv -v |
You should see a display similar to the following:
System: IP28
Processor: xxx Mhz R10000, with FPU
Primary I-cache size: 32 Kbytes
Primary D-cache size: 32 Kbytes
Secondary cache size: 1024 Kbytes
Memory size: 64 Mbytes

After you are satisfied that the new components are recognized by hinv and the system is running normally, type exit to quit the Command Monitor. If the components do not show up, contact Global Customer Support (GCS) for assistance.
Do not allow the system to boot. Instead, reenter the System Maintenance Menu (press <Esc>).
You are now ready to boot the miniroot and install IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000. Go to Section 2.6, "Installing New Software."
The next step in the upgrade procedure is to install the IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000. You must perform this installation from the miniroot.
Follow these steps to boot the miniroot and install IRIX 6.2:
Make sure a CD-ROM drive is attached to the system (or is available on the network). This procedure assumes you have a CD-ROM drive attached directly to the system. If you have to use a CD-ROM drive across the network, see the IRIX Admin: Software Installation and Licensing guide, Document Number 007-1364-060, for information on booting the miniroot from a remote CD-ROM.
Load the IRIX 6.2 for IMPACT 10000 CD (Part number 813-0469-xxx) into the CD-ROM drive.
At the System Maintenance Menu, select option 2, Install System Software.
You see a series of icons representing installation choices. Select the icon for the installation you are performing, for example Local CD-ROM. The miniroot should begin to load.
After a while, you should see the inst prompt. A default set of subsystems is selected for installation. You may wish to add or delete subsystems depending upon your customer's needs.
After you have selected the appropriate subsystems, enter go at the inst prompt.
Once all the subsystems are installed, enter quit to exit from inst.
Reboot the system to multiuser mode.
Log in and enter the following command to verify that the installation worked and that the operating system is the correct version of IRIX 6.2:
uname -a |
If uname reports that the system is running IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000, the installation is successful.
If the installation fails, see the IRIX Admin: Software Installation and Licensing guide, Document Number 007-1364-060 for troubleshooting suggestions.
You can now complete the installation. See Section 2.7, "Completing the Installation."
There are two final steps to complete the upgrade:
Attach the "10000" badge to the front of the system. It snaps into the front grill.
Install the upgrade label that indicates the new Silicon Graphics model number of the system. Affix the label at the rear of the system, covering part of the old label.
You are now ready to pack the old components for return shipment to Silicon Graphics. Turn to Chapter 3, "Returning the Old Components."
