Chapter 1. Introduction

This guide describes the procedures used to upgrade an existing Silicon Graphics® Indigo2 IMPACT™ to an Indigo2 IMPACT 10000. This guide is designed as a field upgrade document for Silicon Graphics trained or approved system support engineers only.


Caution: Part of the upgrade process includes installing a new version of IRIX. This upgrade requires "IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000" (Software part number 813-0469-xxx), or a later compatible version of IRIX.


Overview

The basic steps to upgrade the system are:

  • Verify that the customer's system has been backed up.

  • Verify that you have all of the required components before proceeding with the installation.

  • Remove the power supply and IP22 board. This requires removal of the 5.25" drive tray, graphics board set, EISA boards (if any), and graphics backplane.

  • Move the customer's SIMMs from the old IP22 board to the new IP28 board.

  • Install the new power supply and IP28 board, then reinstall the 5.25" drive tray, graphics board set, EISA boards (if any), and graphics backplane.

  • Install IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000.

  • Verify the installation, then attach the upgrade "10000" emblem to the front of the system and the upgrade identification label to the back of the system.

  • Pack and return the old components.

Upgrade Considerations

Although the Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 resembles the Indigo2 IMPACT, there are a number of differences. This section discusses those which could affect the upgrade.

New Operating System

The R10000 requires the 64-bit IRIX 6.2 with IMPACT 10000 operating system. This is installed as part of the upgrade.

Software Support

Be aware that some binaries may not be compatible with IRIX 6.2.

Be aware that some applications may not be supported under IRIX 6.2 or on R10000-based systems. Check with the application vendor to be sure.

Option Board Support

Be aware that some option boards may not yet be supported in the new configuration. Either you or the customer may wish to verify with Silicon Graphics whether or not a particular option board is supported.

Environmental Factors

An Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 system consumes almost exactly as much power and dissipates almost exactly as much heat as an R4400®-based Indigo2 IMPACT. There are no additional site requirements for power and no additional site requirements for cooling.

All other environmental specifications, including humidity, altitude, temperature, and vibration are also unchanged.

New Power Supply

The new power supply (part number 060-8002-xxx) provides slightly higher nominal 3.3-volt power (3.45 volts). The increase is required for the R10000 processor.


Note: A special power supply (part number 060-0027-xxx) is required for Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 with the dual-head option. Contact Global Customer Support (GCS) for further information about this power supply.

For Indigo2 power supply compatibility information, refer to Appendix A, "Indigo2 Power Supply Compatibility."

Maximum Memory Configurations

The IP28 board can support more memory than the IP22. The maximum memory that can be installed in an Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 system depends upon the density of the SIMMs, as shown in Table 1-1.

[a] Only two of the three SIMM banks can be used with 64 MB memory. Any two banks may contain the 64 MB SIMMs, but the remaining bank must have 32 MB or smaller SIMMs.
