SGI GenomeCluster supports the following topologies:

A head node and multiple execution nodes
A node that is both the head node and an execution node, plus other execution nodes
A single node that is both the head node and the execution node (used for testing purposes)

You will also have an SGI Origin 200 file server as part of the cluster. Because of the enhanced I/O capabilities of IRIX and the Origin 200 system architecture, the file server serves as the cluster file server and the PBS server/scheduler for the whole cluster. The maximum internal data storage of a single Origin 200 system is approximately 756 GB. This capacity is expandable to 1,699,456 GB.

Figure 3-1, depicts the standard topology. The nodes must be SGI 1100, SGI 1200, SGI 1400, or SGI 1450 systems. Figure 3-2, depicts the topology with the optional Lconsole serial-port console feature. Notice that you must use a serial multiplexer when you use this optional feature. In addition, if you use the SGIconsole cluster manager, you must use a RocketPort multiplexer.
