The Oracle Parallel Server™ (OPS™) represents a significant development in RDBMS capability for ORACLE® users. The ability to cluster two computer systems and coordinate their access to a single shared ORACLE database provides for increased throughput with higher levels of application and database availability. Using a CHALLENGE RAID storage system can provide high availability.

The Silicon Graphics® OPS consists of the following hardware components:
two Challenge™ servers
optionally, for each Challenge DM, L, or XL server, an external peripheral enclosure for SCSI storage devices: Challenge Vault M, Challenge Vault L, or Challenge Vault XL, respectively
one IRISconsole™: either
32-bit uniprocessor Indy® workstations, as well as Indigo® and Indigo2™ workstations with the R4000® or R4400® processor, running IRIX™ 6.2
or
IRIX 5.3 with XFS™: Indy workstations only
one IRISconsole serial port multiplexer, cables, and software
one Challenge RAID deskside storage system with two storage-control processors (SPs) and at least five disk modules
required hardware upgrades and cables

OPS software runs on systems running IRIX™ 6.2 or 5.3 with XFS. The software making up the OPS configuration consists of IRIX 6.2, IRIX patches for OPS (for both 6.2 and 5.3 with XFS), Silicon Graphics Oracle Parallel Server software, and software for the component systems, such as IRISconsole and the Challenge RAID storage system software. Optional software includes Performance Co-Pilot™ (PCP), IRIXPro™, Database Accelerator (DBA), and NetWorker®. The customer also obtains ORACLE RDBMS and OPS software from Oracle Corp.
The Oracle Parallel Server runs on systems using IRIX 6.2 or 5.3 with XFS only. The Oracle Parallel Server software version required depends on the IRIX version:
IRIX 6.2: Oracle software version 7.3.2 or later
IRIX 5.3: Oracle software version 7.2.2 or later, including 7.3.x
