The contents of this User Guide, the Reference Manual, and EnlightenDSM on-line help contain all the information you need to take full advantage of EnlightenDSM software. Electronic versions of both the User Guide and the Reference Manual are also located in the /doc directory of the installation CD-ROM (see the readme.txt file for information on accessing these electronic versions).
This EnlightenDSM User Guide contains step-by-step instructions for setting up, maintaining, and monitoring systems on a network. If you are new to network administration, start at the beginning of this manual and work through the chapters sequentially. If you are an experienced network system administrator, you can use the User Guide as a reference tool to find specific information.
For instructions on installing the EnlightenDSM software, refer to Appendix C in the EnlightenDSM User Guide. These instructions include system requirements for running the software.
The EnlightenDSM Reference Guide provides a concise summary of all EnlightenDSM features.
EnlightenDSM's on-line help system provides easily accessible information on each feature. To access the on-line help system, click the Help icon that appears in the top right corner of most EnlightenDSM screens.
This user guide is organized into the following chapters:
Chapter 1, “Before You Begin,” briefly describes the features of the EnlightenDSM program.
Chapter 2, “Getting Started,” describes how to set up EnlightenDSM program preferences, create network pools, and configure user authorizations.
Chapter 3, “Setting Up a Basic Network Configuration,” describes how to add and modify user accounts, create groups, and configure network printers.
Chapter 4, “Managing the Network Systems,” describes how to manage disk partitions, NFS servers, hosts, cron jobs, and archive files.
Chapter 5, “Monitoring Networked Systems with Events,” describes how to use EnlightenDSM Events and Status Map features to gather, monitor and interpret system information. This chapter contains instructions on using these tools to view host and pool status, audit security checks, and monitor logins, processes, CPU and printer usage.
Chapter 6, “Fine-tuning Events with PEP,” contains instructions for using the Programmable Events Processor (PEP) and Enterprise Management Database (EMD). The Programmable Events Processor (PEP) allows you to centrally manage Events so that it reports only on issues you predetermine. EMD is an application manager in charge of all communication between the database and other EnlightenDSM components
Appendix A, “EnlightenDSM Basics,” describes the use of global function buttons in EnlightenDSM windows and how to perform actions on list items. This chapter also contains information on network pools, creating defaults and performance expectations.
Appendix B, “Troubleshooting,” lists error messages, describes their significance, and suggests possible solutions. This section also describes solutions to some common problems you might encounter when using EnlightenDSM.
Appendix C, “Installing EnlightenDSM,” contains step-by-step instructions for installing EnlightenDSM.
Appendix D, “De-installing EnlightenDSM,” describes how to de-install EnlightenDSM.
